info How to Calculate SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is an indicator of your performance in a single semester. Follow these steps to calculate it manually:

  1. List Subjects & Credits: Write down all subjects and their credit units (e.g., Maths - 4 credits).
  2. Assign Grade Points: Assign the points for each grade (e.g., O=10, A=9) according to your university.
  3. Multiply: Multiply the grade points by the credits for each subject to get "Weighted Points".
  4. Sum: Total all Weighted Points and total all Credits.
  5. Divide: Divide Total Weighted Points by Total Credits to get your SGPA.
SGPA = Σ(C_i × G_i) / Σ C_i

Where C is Credits and G is Grade Points of each subject.

SGPA vs CGPA: What's the Difference?

SGPA (Semester GPA)

Reflects your performance for one specific semester. It acts as a snapshot of how you did in a ~6 month period. It is useful for monitoring immediate progress.

CGPA (Cumulative GPA)

Reflects your overall performance across all completed semesters. It is the average of all your SGPAs. Most companies and universities look at your final CGPA for admissions and jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

SGPA is calculated by multiplying the credits assigned to each subject by the grade points earned, summing these up, and then dividing by the total credits attempted in the semester. The standard formula is Σ(Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Total Credits).
The most common formula used by Indian universities is Percentage = SGPA × 10. Some institutions use (SGPA - 0.75) × 10. Our calculator defaults to the standard ×10 multiplier but you should verify with your university norms.
Yes! An SGPA of 7.5 converts to 75% in most systems, which is considered a 'Distinction' or 'First Class with Distinction'. It is a very safe score for most job opportunities and higher studies.
Yes, SGPA includes all credit-based academic activities including theory papers, laboratories, projects, and vivas, as long as they carry credits in your syllabus.
Generally, an SGPA of 7.5 or above is considered good, while 8.5+ is outstanding. Most top companies require a minimum of 6.5 to 7.0 for campus placements.
Absolutely. Just switch to the "4-Point Scale" tab in Step 1. We support the standard A=4.0, B=3.0 scale used by US and international universities.
